The Moorhens in the Italian Garden now have four new chicks, milling around in an unruly heap in their small nest. It was a busy scene.

They were visited by one of the older chicks, now going through their drab teenage stage (rather like some of the Goths I saw going to the concert in the park).

A Mallard with three ducklings swam past.

And on the other side of the same pond several carp were visible. They are now about 10 inches long.

The Great Crested Grebes' nest in the main lake nearby is a going concern, and the birds were busy draping it with weed to make the twiggy Coot-built structure more comfortable from their point of view.

Meanwhile at Peter Pan, the Coots had found a rainbow streamer that blew into the lake from the Gay Pride march a few days ago, and had dragged it up and arranged it to ornament their nest. Note also the chic red drinking straw that adds the final touch to the décor.

The Tawny Owlets remained out of sight again today, although several people were looking for them. Fortunately the male Little Owl had come out to sunbathe, which assuaged their disappointment to some extent.

Nearby in the leaf yard, a Jay was also sunbathing.
