A Wood Pigeon in the Rose Garden picked the last bits out of a roast chestnut dropped by someone coming out of the Winter Wasteland.
A Carrion Crow at the Lido restaurant wondered if it liked penne all' arrabbiata.
Yes, it did.
A Magpie on an urn in the Italian Garden didn't need to do anything, as it knew I was going to give it a peanut.
A Coal Tit peeped shyly out of a yew bush in the Rose Garden shrubbery.
A Blue Tit perched on a nearby branch.
The local Robin and the male Chaffinch came out together ...
... followed by the female Chaffinch.
At the island the Grey Heron sitting on eggs got up for a moment to turn round.
On the baskets below a heron chased off a rival ...
... and was joined by its mate for a display.
A young Great Crested Grebe at the boat platform had slight difficulty in swallowing a perch it had caught. The spiny dorsal fin always causes problems, and the fish can only be swallowed head first.
The Moorhen at the Vista was climbing in its favourite bush.
The Wigeon at the Round Pond came ashore to graze.
Ahmet Amerikali was in SouthwarkPark, where he found a leucistic Blackbird.
We have had two in the park in recent years, one very patched and looking like a little Magpie, the other with just a white face. Both attracted attention and feeding and became quite confident with people.
Ahmet also saw an overwintering Chiffchaff.
On a Sunday in the days leading up to Christmas owners of dachshunds and other small dogs dress their pets up as Santa Claus and seasonal fripperies and meet near the Italian Garden. This participant has, perhaps, gone a little over the top. As I read it, he is dressed as a Christmas elf from the Will Ferrell film, but his head is that of Doge, the Japanese meme that was all the rage in 2013. His dachshund is supposed to be a reindeer and he also has a poodle hybrid dressed as a Christmas pudding. The dachshund is chewing a carrot. I do hope he hasn't imposed a vegan diet on the poor creatures.
I'll refrain from commenting about the dog situation.
ReplyDeleteVery glad to see the young Grebe is now able to catch fish so large it will cause it a bit of trouble to make it go down.
I'm sure there's some food Crows don't like, but nothing comes to mind!

Yes, it's really good about the young grebe. The boat platform is an excellent p[lace for fishing, a large area of deep shadow and easy to move around in as the platform is on posts.
DeleteCrows don't like any salad vegetables, of course, though they're happy to eat any mayonnaise that happens to be on them. And, like many birds, they won't eat strawberries. I don't know why: maybe it's just the wateriness but I have a feeling that there's something about the odour that repels birds.
Wow, the birds were lucky today, both roast chestnuts and penne all'arrabbiata!
