Pigeon Eater frustrated

Pigeon Eater was looking annoyed. He had just missed a Feral Pigeon ...

... and a Grey Heron was standing in his place on the Dell restaurant roof.

The two pairs of herons on the island  were attending to their nests -- though, as we know all too well from past years, that doesn't mean that they're definitely going to nest now. One of them has a noticeably red bill, a sign of being in breeding condition.

Three Common Gulls on the Long Water preened on the posts at Peter Pan while a Coot chased another Coot underneath and a young Mute Swan cruised past.

The Black-Headed Gulls are beginning to get their dark heads. This is the most advanced one I saw, except of course for the dominant gull on the landing stage who has been in breeding plumage for several weeks.

A pair of Tufted Ducks on the Long Water were going up and down like yoyos.

A Pochard could be seen through the branches of the collapsed willow at the bridge, a favourite hangout for all the ducks.

The female Wigeon on the Round Pond was lonely ...

... so she came ashore and joined a group of Egyptian Geese.

The Egyptians in the Rose Garden were on the Huntress fountain again. It's a good place to rest while not grazing, as it's safe from dogs and children.

In the shrubbery the male Chaffinch ...

... and the local Robin came out for pine nuts.

The Kensington Gardens Chaffinch picked me up at the Flower Walk and followed me all the way to the Round Pond.

He was accompanied by a Jay.

The Little Owl was in her hole, but came out at the front for a short time.

A pair of Magpies perched on a dead hawthorn beside the Long Water. There are a lot of dead hawthorns in Kensington Gardens, and it's high time more were planted to provide fruit for the birds.

A Magpie perched on an umbrella at the Lido restaurant, but on a cold day there were few humans outside to provide scraps for it.

  1. Glad to see Pigeon Eater was in a better mood today. Not all days can be winners, I'm sure he knows.

    1. I think his principal thought is 'More, more, more!' Followed by 'Get off my patch!'
