A Great Spotted Woodpecker flew into a tree near the bridge.

A short way along the railings, a Blue Tit wondered why I was pointing a large black thing at it instead of feeding it at once..

A Robin struck a defiant pose in the Rose Garden: 'This is my bush and you shan't have it.'

The female Little Owl was in her nest tree beside the leaf yard.

This Black-Headed Gull is a visitor from Poland who returns to the park every year.

The young Grey Heron at the Dell restaurant stared hungrily at the Saturday crowd, hoping for a titbit to be thrown.

A Cormorant preened its wing on a post next to the island.

A young Great Crested Grebe on the Round Pond preened itself next to a Lesser Black-Backed Gull on one of the numbered buoys used in the Sunday model sailing boat races.

A flight of Mallards circled over the pond to gain height before heading westward, perhaps to the Wetland Centre or to one of the reservoirs near London Airport.

More Shovellers have arrived on the lake, including this fine drake on the Serpentine.

A White-Tailed Bumblebee visited a flower in the Rose Garden.

This odd lobed fungus was growing on the west side of Long Water near the Italian Garden. I have no idea what it is.

  1. What a beautiful photo of the young heron. I always enjoy your commentary Ralph, which manages without any apparent effort to combine the entertaining with the informative and educational!
