An extra grebe chick?

A Robin in the Rose Garden sang against a rival ...

... in a red-leafed cherry tree.

There were four singing here, and another two in the Dell of which this was one.

Puddles from today's rain provided Feral Pigeons with places to drink and bathe.

The rubbish bins with covers at the Lido restuarant were intended to keep scavenging birds out, but you can't beat a Magpie.

A wine cork makes a fine toy for a young Herring Gull. It rolls, it floats, and bits can be pecked out of it.

We seem to have an extra Great Crested Grebe chick. In addition to the two from the west end of the island ...

... and from the east end (the other one was out of the picture) ...

... and the one from the nest at the Dell restaurant ...

... there was this one on the Long Water, seen here from the bridge.

The grebes nesting in the willow here had one chick, but later I saw a pair definitely without a chick and assumed that they'd lost it. Either I was wrong or this one is from an unsuspected nest. It's several weeks old, and it's strange not to have seen it all this time.

A Moorhen climbed over the roots of the willow.

A young one foraged in the drizzle.

Cormorants preened on the posts where the unsuccessful tern raft was moored until it fell to bits.

The Mute Swan family were resting in the reeds on the Long Water, where they have already trampled down the stems to make a comfortable day bed.

The last remaining terrapin was on the roots of a nearby tree. Usually they only come out to bask in sunshine.

A Common Carder bee fed on the strange flowers of Bat-Faced Cuphea, C. llavea, also known as Tiny Mice.

Ahmet Amerikali found a real Wood Mouse at Canada Water examining a withered Black-Eyed Susan flower ...

... and a Little Grebe in Southwark Park pulling a fish out of a dense mat of duckweed.

  1. Love the Carder bee feeding on the flowers and the Little Grebe in duck weed.

    1. There are three kinds of flower in this pot, and two of them are accessible only to Common Carders. This is almost certainly a coincidence, but it results in a lot of them visiting.

  2. The Little Grebe looks as if it's trying for camouflage ideas. Now I have the mental image of a Little Grebe sniper carrying a tiny non lethal rifle.
Great news about the possible new Grebe chick. I hope to God this will be a good year.

    1. I may have mentioned this before, but duckweed can get so thick that it covers the entire surface of the water. A few years ago this happened in the Italian Garden pools. A tourist thought it was a lawn and stepped on to it. Splosh. Everyone laughed except the tourist, who climbed out suffused with green and fury.
