I only hope there is a happy afterlife for them, by the lovely light of the fireflies.Tinúvielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04794275230697959519noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8278510471239667560.post-23514840979165493842018-05-05T02:23:26.277+01:002018-05-05T02:23:26.277+01:00I don't think we're on safe ground, or rat...I don't think we're on safe ground, or rather that the grebe chick is on safe ground. This is the wrong time of year for grebes to breed on this lake, where small fish don't appear till midsummer. There may be one survivor, as there was last year, or none. Grebes are amazingly attentive parents, but this is a time of famine. (And for those who love these little stripy chicks, it's like having to watch Grave of the Fireflies every year.)

The Spanish child was indeed looking at the Coots' nest. It's a large and impressive thing, directly under the balcony.Ralph Hancockhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11686354797977020917noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8278510471239667560.post-38288496641625607052018-05-04T22:14:56.149+01:002018-05-04T22:14:56.149+01:00How long would a Grebe chick survive if not fed? Not going to link an image, no sir. Brrrr.

In the Coot video a Spanish-speaking child can be heard in the background. I can only make out that he repeats "madre mía" (roughly, "My Goodness").Tinúvielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04794275230697959519noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8278510471239667560.post-24400847569728124532018-05-04T22:03:09.877+01:002018-05-04T22:03:09.877+01:00Mandarins are a bit too Clarice Cliff for me.Mandarins are a bit too Clarice Cliff for me.Ralph Hancockhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11686354797977020917noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8278510471239667560.post-67164898857807417852018-05-04T21:59:50.164+01:002018-05-04T21:59:50.164+01:00I totally agree about the elegence of the Gadwall....I totally agree about the elegence of the Gadwall.
