A Great Spotted Woodpecker was drumming at the top of a tree next to the Little Owls' tree near the Albert Memorial.

The female owl looked round at it.

The new Little Owl was in his usual oak tree near the Italian Garden. I managed to photograph him without scaring him away. Maybe he is getting used to fame.

The female owl in the lime tree near the Henry Moore sculpture is also calmer than she used to be.

A pair of Grey Herons were on the highest nest on the island.

One of them flew off into another tree to break off twigs for the nest.

There was still some ice on the Serpentine. A young Herring Gull stood on the edge playing with a feather.

A Mute Swan cruised through the ice, rocking backwards and forwards so that it came down on the ice and broke it. A pair of Mallards followed it down the cleared channel at a discreet distance.

A Gadwall pushed through a small wave in the open water.

A Great Crested Grebe was fishing under the edge of the ice at the east end of the Serpentine. He is already in full breeding plumage, though his mate is still in her winter feathers.

The Long Water remains almost entirely frozen. It freezes more easily than the Serpentine because it is more sheltered from the wind and the water is still. Two foxes were dozing in the sunshine in their usual place on the east shore just north of the Vista.

A Coal Tit near the bridge came out to be fed.

A few Long-Tailed Tits were looking for insects in the trees near the Italian Garden.
